The left-right-imbalance of binary search trees

چکیده
Abstract. We present a detailed study of left-right-imbalance measures for random binary search trees under the random permutation model, i.e., where binary search trees are generated by random permutations of {1, 2, . . . , n}. For random binary search trees of size n we study (i) the difference between the left and the right depth of a randomly chosen node, (ii) the difference between the left and the right depth of a specified node j = j(n), and (iii) the difference between the left and the right pathlength, and show for all three imbalance measures limiting distribution results.

متن کاملAverage depth in a binary search tree with repeated keys
Random sequences from alphabet {1, . . . , r} are examined where repeated letters are allowed. Binary search trees are formed from these, and the average left-going depth of the first 1 is found. Next, the right-going depth of the first r is examined, and finally a merge (or ‘shuffle’) operator is used to obtain the average depth of an arbitrary node, which can be expressed in terms of the left...
متن کاملProbabilistic analysis of the asymmetric digital search trees
In this paper, by applying three functional operators the previous results on the (Poisson) variance of the external profile in digital search trees will be improved. We study the profile built over $n$ binary strings generated by a memoryless source with unequal probabilities of symbols and use a combinatorial approach for studying the Poissonized variance, since the probability distribution o...

This paper reviews P´olya urn models and their connection to random trees. Basic results are presented, together with proofs that underly the historical evolution of the accompanying thought process. Extensions and generalizations are given according to chronology: • P´olya-Eggenberger’s urn • Bernard Friedman’s urn • Generalized P´olya urns • Extended urn schemes • Invertible urn schemes ...
متن کاملBinary Search Trees Parallel and Sequential Data Structures and Algorithms , 15 - 210 ( Spring 2013 )
Figure 1: a binary tree Search trees are tree-based data structures that can be used to store and search for items that satisfy a total order. There are many types of search trees designed for a wide variety of purposes. Probably, the most common use is to implement sets and tables (dictionaries, mappings). As shown on right, a binary tree is a tree in which every node in the tree has at most t...
